Professional Qualifications Standard for Medical Gas Systems Personnel

ANSI Approved: June 2021

ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 6000-2021 addresses minimum requirements for medical gas systems installers, inspectors, verifiers, maintenance personnel, instructors, and designers.

The 2021 edition of ASSE Series 6000 parallels the medical gas-related requirements of NFPA 99-2021, Health Care Facilities Code.

Standard #6005 – Medical Gas Systems Generalists
Provides general knowledge of medical gas and vacuum systems for the purpose of providing continuing education. Eligible individuals include any person with an interest in medical gas and vacuum systems and equipment.

Standard #6010 – Medical Gas Systems Installers
Applies to any individual who installs piping or components of medical gas systems, including brazers and welders.

Standard #6015 – Bulk Medical Gas/Cryogenic Fluid Central Supply Systems Installers
Applies to any individual who works on or installs bulk or micro-bulk/cryogenic fluid central supply systems supplying health care facilities or components thereof, including brazers and welders on these systems. 

Standard #6020 – Medical Gas Systems Inspectors
Applies to any individual who inspects the installation of medical gas and vacuum distribution systems.

Standard #6030 – Medical Gas Systems Verifiers
Applies to any individual who tests and verifies the operation of medical gas and vacuum systems, except their bulk medical gas/cryogenic fluid central supply systems.

Standard #6035 – Bulk Medical Gas/Cryogenic Fluid Central Supply Systems Verifiers
Applies to any individual who tests and verifies bulk medical gas/cryogenic fluid central supply systems or components supplying health care facilities.

Standard #6040 – Medical Gas Systems Maintenance Personnel
Applies to any individual who maintains medical gas and vacuum systems.

Standard #6050 – Medical Gas Systems Instructors
Applies to any individual who trains or teaches installers, inspectors, verifiers, healthcare facility maintenance personnel, and in some cases designers, regarding medical gas systems in health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99.

Standard #6055 – Bulk Medical Gas/Cryogenic Fluid Central Supply Systems Instructors
Applies to any individual who trains or teaches Bulk Medical Gas/Cryogenic Fluid Central Supply Systems installers, verifiers and instructors.

Standard #6060 – Medical Gas Systems Designer
Applies to any individual who designs medical gas systems, new or existing, including the layout, sizing and selection of equipment and piping, location of medical gas outlet/vacuum inlets and assessment of existing systems for resizing or replacement.
